Android is a mobile operating system. In much the same way as your laptop or home PC is likely to either run on Windows or Apple Mac OS.
Initially developed by a relatively small company Android was purchased by the internet giant Google in 2005.
Development progressed alongside the formation of the Open Handset Alliance in 2007. An alliance that 78 companies initially signed up to, including Google themselves, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Qualcomm and T-Mobile to name just a few. Members were drawn from all corners of the Hardware & Software development and Telecoms markets.
In 2008 Garmin, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Vodafone Group PLC also joined the Open Handset Alliance.
The guiding principle was the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The idea being to create a platform that was open to having new Software Applications ‘Apps’ published upon it, rather than restricting their sources.
Android has a large and growing community of Apps developers striving to develop more and more Apps to give the handsets and tablets upon which Android runs more and more capabilities.
Today the online Android Apps store run by Google has an estimated 160,000 Apps available. Many of which remain free to download.
In addition, and in line with the guiding principles of the Alliance Apps can also be downloaded from 3rd party sites and developers.
Android based handsets market share in the UK is growing rapidly as more and more manufacturers choose to release their latest smartphones incorporating the Android software. It has been estimated that between April and June of 2010 one in eight of all handsets sold operate on the Android platform.
These include such high profile releases as the HTD Desire and Desire HD, the Samsung Galaxy S, the Sony Ericsson X10 and the LG GT540. A new generation of budget Android phones is also in the offing, along with a range of Tablets from Samsung and Creative among others.
Perhaps the latest high profile App to be released is the free to download Amazon Kindle App, allowing the user to download ebooks directly onto the handset without needing to purchase one of Amazons Kindle devices. A reflection of the profile Android is rapidly gaining.
