Symbian OS is Nokias operating system for its current range of smartphones. Traditionally these can be identified by having the ‘N’ or ‘E’ moniker before their handset reference eg N96 or E75. More recently the Symbian Operating System has also been extended to Nokias C-Series.
The Symbian platform was originally developed by Psion in 2000 for use on its smartphone range. Subsequently development was continued by Symbian Limited, a software development and licensing company. At this time Symbian could be found on Nokia, Sony Ericsson (then Ericsson) and Siemens smartphone devices.
In 2008 Nokia bought Symbian and the non-profit Symbian foundation was established.
Early variations of Symbian OS were locked. Third party applications ‘Apps’ could not be downloaded. From 2008 and Symbian OS 9.1 Nokia and the Symbian Foundation have been working on an ‘Open Source’ principle similar in function to the Android library or Apple Apps library and allowing third party publishers and Apps.
Symbian, in part by virtue of its longevity, remains the biggest selling platform upon which smartphones operate today. Although their market share is being eroded by both Apple and Android based handsets as well as RIM’s Blackberry range.
Following on from the new Open Source structure the Nokia Ovi (Finnish for door) Apps Library was launched in May 2009.
Nokias Ovi Apps Library was a late arrival to market, lagging behind both the Apple Apps Library and Android Apps Market, however there are a growing number of Apps available.
